3/26/13: Cigarette Relighting Tied to Tough Economy.

Read the March 26, 2013 NJtoday.net news article documenting a study by The Cancer Institute of NJ and presented at the 19th Annual Meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco held last week in Boston, MA.

Researchers found that fewer cigarettes per day (16 vs. 20) were smoked by the relighting group. Unfortunately, according to senior author, Dr. Michael Steinberg, MD, MPH, FACP, a member of the Cancer Institute of NJ and director of the Tobacco Dependence Program, “Despite those engaging in the relighting practice smoking fewer cigarettes, there is no estimated reduction in their exposure to toxins. In fact, smokers who relight cigarettes may be at higher risk of lung cancer and chronic bronchitis.”
