GASP White Papers
GASP researches and reviews data on emerging trends in tobacco control, resulting in white papers that serve as technical assistance. The following GASP white papers are on subjects that protect children from tobacco smoke exposure:
- Smoking Ban Outdoors White Paper discusses the benefits of creating 100% smokefree outdoor recreational environments to protect all people, including children. Reviews public health, environmental and cost benefits of outdoor smokefree parks, playgrounds, beaches and other recreational facilities. Includes supportive documentation and list of jurisdictions banning smoking in outdoor recreational areas. Go to GASP's Smokefree Outdoor Policies webpage for more information on the topic.
- Smoking Ban in Cars White Paper discusses the benefits of creating 100% smokefree vehicular environments for children. Includes supportive documentation and list of jurisdictions banning smoking in vehicles when children are present. Watch a video produced by Tobacco Free CA about secondhand smoke in cars. A study published June 21, 2010 in the European Journal of Public Health found the majority of U.S. smokers support bans (60%). Read the study abstract and an April 18, 2011 editorial in support of smokefree cars carrying kids.
- Protecting Foster/Resource Family
Children White Paper discusses the importance of protecting foster/resource
family children from tobacco smoke exposure in homes and cars. Includes
supportive documentation and list of jurisdictions banning smoking in homes
and vehicles where foster/resource family children are located.
- New electronic smoking devices, such as “hookah pens”, can appeal to minors. They are colorful, come in fruit and candy flavors, and allow the smoker to be discreet in their usage around parents or other adults in school situations. Go to http://www.texashookah.com/images/disposablehookah.htm to see an example of these types of products. Read our white paper with information on the health issues surrounding Electronic Cigarettes.
